When Phoebe picked Marco up at the station at the end of his shift, something about her was different.

And he wasn’t sure he liked it. She seemed…subdued. Too quiet. Unsmiling. He motioned for her to switch places with him so he could drive. Then he had to adjust the seat, and the mirrors.

This is why he never let anyone else drive his truck.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong. In fact, you’ll be happy to hear I have a job. The personal assistant interview I mentioned. She hired me on the spot.”

“Oh, yeah? That’s great, Phoebe. Sure didn’t take you long. Good going. I knew you could do it.”

“It’s an interesting job. I think it might challenge me.”

“What does your employer do?”

“She’s a matchmaker.”

Marco didn’t know that was still a thing given Tinder and all the other apps, but leave it to Miracle Bay to have a real, live matchmaker. “Interesting. And what are you going to do for her?”

“Organize. She has receipts mixed with photographs. Complete chaos. They desperately need me. You should have seen the disaster. I’m also going to be helping with the Sunset Stroll event they’re starting next week.”

“Sunset stroll? That’s a new one to me.”

“Yeah, they wanted an event to kick off the summer.”

“Why not? I’m surprised we don’t have an Autumn, Christmas, New Year and Valentine’s Day one.”

“Oh, Valentine’s is a great idea! I’ll suggest it.”

He was half kidding but should have realized Phoebe would run with it. “How did you like having the boat to yourself while I was gone?”

“It’s scary at night. But at least I had company.”

He nearly drove off the road again. She was entertaining men on his boat? Not okay, but on the other hand, why should he be jealous?

“You met someone and brought him back to the boat? My boat?”

“What are you talking about?”

“You said you had company.”

“Veronica.”

Immediately, he pictured everything he owned on fire. “Veronica? You let her on my boat?”

“Why not? She was perfectly nice.”

“I don’t want her over again. If she shows up while I’m out, don’t let her in.”

“But—”

“No buts!”

Irritation roiling in the pit of his stomach as he drove through traffic like a savage, making it to the marina in record time. If there were damages, he only hoped they would be minimal. He hopped out of the truck and stalked to the boat. It wasn’t Phoebe’s fault and he had to remember this. She didn’t know some women had a mean streak a mile wide. But he’d been a witness to poor choices leading to bad outcomes live and in person. He could have easily been the poor sucker whose clothes and shoes were on fire.

“I don’t understand.” Phoebe ran after him as he jogged down the pier to his boat slip. “Why are you so upset?”

“You don’t know how some women can be.”

“Not Veronica. She’s nice, and anyway I wouldn’t have let her damage your boat. And I was with her the entire time.”

“Maybe you didn’t notice.” He hopped on to the boat and automatically held out his hand for Phoebe.
